Why an A7

Sources of Information - Printed - Updated 27/2/2006

Title Picture Good for EA Sports Good for Vans
The Austin Seven Source book - Purvis 1st Ed ***** Excellent information on most models. Organised by production year. Detail can be difficult to find if it spans more than 1 year.
The Austin Seven- Wyatt *** Information mainly surrounds facts about competition cars. I find the chassis/engine number lists to be very useful. * Chassis/engine number lists useful for identifying year/month of manufacture.
Austin Seven Companion - 750 Motor Club ***** Excellent collection of articles on many aspects of A7 mechanics. Beware conflicting information
Guide to Building reproduction Austin Ulsters - C. Gould ***** Invaluable! Not relevant
Original Austin Seven - Rinsey Mills *** Good pictorial references with supporting text. Has gaps. * Vans are poorly represented directly however (with reference to A7 Source Book) more information can be extracted
The Austin Seven Manual - Woodrow - Mercury Vintage Publications +44 (0) 1945 430058 ***** I don't care what some people say about this book, it is the only publication I have found that gives this level of mechanical detail.
Magazine of the Austin Seven Clubs Association - Various back issues 1980 - 2005 *** Contains some articles and photos not published elsewhere that are useful.
Magazine of the Austin Seven owners Club - Various back issues 1980 - 2005 ** Contains some articles and photos not published elsewhere that are useful.
The book of the Austin Seven and Eight - Stanton Abbey (Pitmans). Out of print but many copies around S/H. Price around £4.00

***** A surprisingly useful "how to.." and reference book considering its small size.

General Maintenance

***** I keep two copies of this. 1 clean one and one for workshop reference .

General Maintenance

The Austin Seven list of spare parts for low frame chassis (1406c) - Austin Motor Co. Some of these are still available via Mercury Vintage Publications although 1406c is not in the 2005 list * Some use where assemblies do not change from the 6'3" chassis. However 670d would be better. (Mercury Publications - +44 (0)1945 430058 £4.50 + p&p (17/1/2005) ***** This matches my 1937 chassis and is great for identifying where parts should be that have long since gone missing or disintegrated.
Austin Seven Specials - Building Maintenance and Tuning - LM (Bill Williams 1st Ed, 5th reprint. **** Some good background on sports engines + stripping and rebuilding. How to make them go faster and Austin weak spots. * I didn't think it would be relevant when I picked it up but it has a section on hydraulic brake conversions which is useful.
The Repair of Vehicle Bodies - W A Livesey A Robinson 5th Ed. Butterworth Heineman ***** A modern vehicle repair text book. recommended by and used by College's for motor vehicle repair courses. Detailed information on panel beating, welding, tools etc. Very useful.
Motor Engineering - Anon - Circa 1937 - George Newnes ***** A very useful 34 part period magazine. Lots of general information plus many specifc articles on Austin Sevens **** Some Van specific chapters on van bodies.
Oxy-Acetylene Welding Repair Manual - 1938 7th Ed. 1946 - C Bainbridge F Clark - Porteous Ltd ***** An excellent period publication giving clear concise information on repairing many materials including cast iron, aluminium, magnesium, steel, mild steel, chromium steel, etc
The Modern Motor Engineer - A W Judge Circa 1937/38 Caxton Press ***** An excellent 5 volume period publication on repair and maintenance. Many period photos and detail on some specific makes and items too numerous to mention. Volume 5 is dedicated to Wiring Diagrams for over sixty different pre-war vehicles.
Motor Repair and Overhauling - 1939 George Newnes I only have a few copies of this magazine. It is insufficient for an opinion as yet.
